Everlasting Father
There are times when our sense of belonging has been unsettled.
Places, relationships or communities that once felt like home may have changed. We may have experienced the ache of feeling outside, overlooked or unsure where we belong.
The name Everlasting Father invites us into a belonging that did not begin with human acceptance and cannot be taken from us by human rejection.
Before we found our way toward Him, we were already known.
Before we understood belonging, we were already held.
We are invited to rest within the One whose Love has no beginning, no interruption and no end.
Meeting the Name
In Isaiah’s prophetic words, the promised child is called Everlasting Father—Avi-ad in Hebrew.
The word av means father, but it carries more than the idea of a title or position. It speaks of source, nurture, protection, provision and the one from whom something receives its life.
The word ad carries the sense of perpetuity: continuing beyond the boundaries we can see, enduring without end.
Together, Avi-ad may be understood as Father of Eternity or the Father whose care is everlasting.
This name reveals a Love that is not temporary, fragile or dependent upon our ability to maintain relationship. The Father does not welcome us one day and withdraw from us the next. His care is not diminished by our questions, weariness or uncertainty.
Human experiences of fatherhood may have given us beautiful glimpses of this Love. They may also have left us with absence, disappointment or pain. We do not have to deny any part of our experience to enter this invitation.
Everlasting Father does not ask us to force an unfamiliar image of fatherhood over what we have lived through. He gently reveals the true nature of fatherly Love: Love that does not abandon, control or require us to earn our place.
His is the Love from which we came and within which we remain.
We do not have to search for the way home to Him.
We are awakening to the One in whom we have always belonged.
