YHWH - The One Who is Present
An embodied invitation to become aware of the Presence already holding us.
יהוה — YHWH
There are moments when God feels distant—not because He has withdrawn, but because weariness, uncertainty or the noise around us has made His nearness difficult to recognise.
At other times, we may have spent so long trying to reach Him, hear Him or become worthy of His attention that seeking has become more familiar to us than receiving.
The name YHWH invites us to begin somewhere deeper than our ability to find God.
It invites us to begin with God Himself:
the One who is,
the One who will be,
and the One who is to come.
He is the One who has always been present before we became aware of Him.
His name does not place a demand upon us to cross the distance between ourselves and God.
It reveals that, in Him, the distance we fear has never had the final word.

Meeting the Name
When God revealed His name to Moses, Moses was standing before a fire that burned without consuming. He was being called toward a future he could not control, carrying questions about his own adequacy and uncertainty about how he would be received.
Moses asked, in effect, “Who am I to do this?”
God did not answer by enlarging Moses’ confidence in himself.
He answered with a promise: “I will be with you.”
Presence was the answer before the name was the explanation.
When Moses then asked what name he should give to Israel, God replied, Ehyeh Asher Ehyeh. These Hebrew words are often translated “I AM WHO I AM,” but ehyeh can also carry a future sense: “I WILL BE WHAT I WILL BE” or “I WILL BE WHO I WILL BE.”
The words hold more than a static statement that God exists. They reveal the living, uncontained One whose being does not depend upon anything outside Himself—the One who will be faithfully present as His purpose unfolds.
God then gives Moses the name YHWH, the four Hebrew letters sometimes called the Tetragrammaton. YHWH is closely related to the language of being in this passage, yet it is not a definition we can contain. The name remains spacious and mysterious: He is the One who is, the One who causes Life to be, and the One whose presence will prove true within the story still ahead.
This is why the name cannot be reduced to a label.
It is revelation and promise.
YHWH is the name by which God makes Himself known in relationship—the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob; the One who remembers, hears, sees and comes near; the One who enters the suffering of His people and brings them into freedom.
Later, when Moses asks to see God’s glory, YHWH passes before him and proclaims His own name together with His character: compassionate and gracious, slow to anger, abounding in steadfast love and faithfulness.
The One who is present is not an unnamed force or an impersonal atmosphere.
His presence carries His character.
The One who is here is compassionate.
The One who is here is gracious.
The One who is here abounds in steadfast Love.
We may sometimes experience circumstances in which we cannot discern what God is doing. We may not know what lies ahead, and we may not feel what we expected His presence to feel like.
YHWH does not ask us to manufacture certainty or sensation.
His name invites us to rest our awareness in the faithfulness of His being.
He is not more present when we feel peaceful and less present when we feel distracted. He is not nearer when our faith feels strong and farther away when we have questions. Our awareness may change; His presence does not.
The name YHWH gathers past, present and future within the constancy of who He is.
The One who was present in all that has been, remains present here and will be present in everything still to come.
We do not have to bring Him into this moment.
We are awakening within the moment already held in Him.
